He should be 35

Last Friday, March 23rd, would have been my first husband's birthday. He should have been 35. He's not...

He turned 30 and then stopped. Just 3 months before his 31st birthday, he passed away. Actually he celebrated his 30th birthday in the ICU. I remember waking to 15+ ICU nurses and techs singing to him. I laid on my cot, facing the window and cried.

Garrett's last birthday celebration was in the hospital. 30 is supposed to be a mile stone, a moment in one's life he will always remember. I guess in someways it is...just for me, not him.

Each year, the girls and I get a Boston Cream Pie (his favorite dessert) and have a piece in his honor. The first year without him, many friends and family member joined us for a big celebration...we called it his "Forever 30" party. The second year, it was just me & the girls celebrating. Now the past two year, we have cake with our family and though it's weird for Ryan and the kids, the kids secretly look forward to having Boston Cream Pie.

This year, I couldn't eat one bite. We had the cake twice and I served everyone else. I couldn't even get it to my plate. I laid in bed and cried. I cried, "He should be 35 but he's not." I was supposed to grow old with him. I was supposed to have a lifetime with him. I laid there and just cried...because he should be 35!

Over the past several years, I have grieved so many losses. I lost my husband...and his family. Then I started loosing our friends one by one. Most of his friends have moved on. I woke up one morning and realized I have very few people around me that remember him, not the sick him...HIM. My girls don't seem to really remember him anymore. They parrot back the same stories I have told over and over. There are so many stories... So many stories that are just lost. We have a couple dozen pictures of him (that aren't our wedding pictures). We have a really short video he made in the hospital. Most of my last pictures of him got stolen on a disc. He's fading and I can't seem to hold on to him for them.

Celebrating his 27th birthday with friends at Gunther Toodies in  Denver

He should have been 35. We should have had Boston Cream Pie together. We should have been talking about our future. We should have been celebrating the girls milestone. He should be 35.

This is our last picture together before he got sick...and it's not even focused!

Another happy day

Another one of my friends just got engage this past weekend. I'm so happy for them. She told me the story of his proposal this morning and my heart swells for her. She is so blessed and I'm blessed to be along side of her through this journey.

They set the date for my parent's anniversary. For me, it's another moment when I think about my mom. I see how she colored my world. I am so excited to celebrate another marriage on this date. I think about all the wonderful things she taught me about love, marriage and commitment. This year they would have celebrated 39 years of marriage. Wow...

I pray Sam & Troy are blessed with many years of marriage as well. Congratulations you guys. I can't wait to celebrate with you!

Blessings to you both!

One moment at a time

So life has been a little rough to say the least these past couple of weeks. In that midst of it, I have had many blog posts brewing in my heart and mind. One of my best friends and I talked about the blog post laying in the back of your mind that life doesn't seem to allow us to actually get typed and posted. How long is too long before you just let it go and move on to the next thing happening? Then the thought is that too many things have happened since then and so there are just too many posts that never come to be.

Today, though, I am going to flash back a bit for several reasons. One reason is because it's still on my mind but the main reason is I want to get back into the swing of writing again. It's so much easier for me to write about things that have been brewing for a few weeks. So we are flashing back to Valentine's day weekend.

As I posted not too long ago,  my mom passed away on the 12th of February three years ago. This was one of the hardest days of my life. In the midst of this hard time, my best friend and Ryan's best friend had been dating for a while and on the very day my mom passed away, they decided they weren't going to let life pass them by and made their relationship official. Now, every anniversary of my mom's death is now their anniversary. In a weird way this was good for me. In her death, my mom brought two people together to share their lives. She reminded them that life is short. She reminded them to hold those you love close. So every year, they celebrate another year together, I remember another year without my mom.

This year, on their anniversary, he proposed...and she said yes! I'm so happy for them and excited to celebrate with them. I just wanted to post this to say, congratulations Wil & L. I love you both. I feel blessed that in one of my dark moments, you both remembered to take each moment, one at a time and make the most of it. Now each February 12th, I cry in joy for your lives together and cry for a mom remembered. Please never forget how precious life is. Remember to love each other every moment. Thanks for being apart of our live. Thanks for being amazing friends and thanks for giving me joy on a dark day. I pray God blesses your marriage as He has already blessed your life.

Congrats!

Missing mom...year 3

Tomorrow marks 3 years since my mom passed away. In some ways I think it can't be that long and other ways it seems like an eternity of days that I've been without her. I miss her a lot today.

The day that Haley broke her leg sledding, though my dad was with me, all I wanted was my mom. I wanted to call her a thousand times this week and just talk. It's been a hard week and I knew she would listen to me and tell me stories of my childhood sicknesses and remind me that this would pass, I can do it and she's so proud of me.

As I write this, I feel the tears welling up in my eyes. I miss her so much. I would love to have just one more conversation if only to tell her how much I love her and miss her. She was a rock in my life (one of many) but no one replace mom.

There have been just too many losses in our lives, too many bad days. Today, I just want my mom. I just want her to be here. I want her to share stories of broken bones with Haley. I want her to sign Haley's cast. I want her to sit with Haley on the couch and read stories. I want her to dote on the other kids knowing they feel left out being Haley gets all the attention right now. I want her to ask me what I need. I want to cry to her and tell her I don't know what I need. I want her to tell me that's okay. I want to be the little girl that calls her mom in the middle of the crisis and knows that mom can't fix it but is just glad that she's there.

I'm the mom without a mom. I'm just glad I had her as long as I did. She helped me in the early days of cooking and now I'm a confident cook. She helped me through the baby years and the toddler years and some of the school years with my girls and now I think of that advice as I head into the teen years. She helped me through being a wife and loosing my husband. Somehow that prepared me for being a wife again.

Our last Easter...not that we knew that then.

Glad we took the time to take some pics

I feel like the words to describe what I'm feel are all mixed up and are tumbling out all mixed up. I don't even know what I feel or think. All I know today is: I miss my mom.

Numbers

Four years ago...

Four years ago I spent my very last day being Garrett's wife. Our vows stated, "...till death do us part" and then death parted us. In some ways, it feels like yesterday and other ways it seems as though a million things have happened since then.

So here's the numbers:

48 months
1,460 days
35, 040 hours
2,104,400 minutes (or so)
126,144,000 seconds (or so)

When I put out number like that, it certainly wasn't yesterday. In my heart there are days when all of that pain is far away and other days (like today) when it truly feels like yesterday.

Here's daddy with his little girls:

Megan and daddy.
Haley in fine form...but I can't remember why she was fitting.

So tired

Today I am just plain tired. I'm so tired I can barely hold my eyes open. It seems everything I try to do is just way more difficult than it should be and I just want to take a nap...so I did.

I never know how "hard" days are going to be. I don't know if I'm going to want to cry all day or if I'm going to want to keep busy. I don't know if the day will go by and I'll be cranky, grumpy and snapping at everyone, only to remember (not that I truly ever forget) what day it is.

The "hard" days that seem to be left are birthdays and anniversaries but the anniversaries include wedding, dating, and death anniversaries. It seems that January and February are the hardest. I lost three very important people in those months.

Today it has been four years since Garrett passed away. I never forget. Recently it seems as though it is a story I tell people. Years and years of the telling the story it seems memorized and rehearsed. And then...out of no where, I find myself crying in bed. I feel forgotten. I feel like people have forgotten him. I feel like I am forgetting him. I can't remember parts of our life and there is no one to ask. There is a chunk of my life that doesn't exist anymore.

Many memories stay clear in life because talk about them. We reminisce. We repeat the details. We look at pictures and laugh and say, "Remember when..." There is almost a decade of my life that I have not been able to do that. When some distant memory comes up and I try to remember that place we went or that restaurant we loved, I don't have anyone to ask and so the details are forgotten. I think there were things I didn't even try to remember because I knew he would.

Another hard thing about the memories is that we just don't have very many pictures of Garrett. As parents, we spent a lot of time behind the camera and not nearly enough in front of the camera. Now that I have a beautiful camera, I think I take way too many pictures because of that very reason but once again, I'm just behind the camera.

Today I grieve and it's hard. I've seen it coming. It doesn't get easier, it is just different. Loosing Garrett meant I've lost a lot of memories, some family and our friends. There is hardly anyone left in my life that knew us all along the way and could fill in the memories when I say "Remember when..."

As I looked through pictures it seems the few pictures I have are of our wedding. Here's a few:

Us, my parents and my mom's parents.

Us, my parents & my dad's parent. Only 1/2 of the people in this picture are here today.

Us and my parents.

Garrett & my mom.

Anniversary weekend on a dime...

Ryan and I have been married 2 years as of Friday. This year, of course, our budget didn't allow a costly celebration. I would have liked to take a trip (even just out of town) over night or for the weekend. The budget, however, did not agree. In fact the budget really didn't want us to do anything that could cost anything.

The thing about a budget is that there are fluid parts of it and hard and fast parts of if. There are bills that have to be paid and there is no wiggle room whatsoever. Then there are things like the food budget and even the gas budget. If I refrain from running around town, I'll save on gas. I try to lump all errands on the same day and make them happen to or from a destination to where I am already going, such as dropping kids off at school. As for the food budget, I can start with what I already have in the cupboards and build from there sometimes choosing canned chicken over fresh or making breakfast for dinner because eggs and pancakes are cheap.

These are all great ideas but when it comes down to it, there is only so much savings I can squeeze out and with dental bills and medical bills, there wasn't much left for a weekend let alone a night away this year. That didn't stop us from celebrating!

For three years now, we have been blessed to celebrate with our friends Beth and Wes. We share an anniversary weekend, ours is the 9th and theirs is the 11th. We even went on our honeymoon with them to Las Vegas so they could renew their vows (it was their 10th anniversary that year). This is something I look forward to every year. Busy lives do not always make it so we can get together as often as we would like. Beth and I talk pretty regularly and our families get together here and there but there isn't a lot of time as couples. I always know we'll have once a year to sit down for dinner as couples and just catch up.

This year we decided to go to HuHot for dinner. None of us had been and we'd heard some great things about it. What was really nice is that if fit the budget. Dinner was nice, conversation was wonderful and we all overate. Then Ryan and I went to Itopit for frozen yogurt (being another couple got us hooked-thanks Sam & Troy). We enjoyed a nice dessert and then we went home. The kids were at his parents for the evening so we just watch movies and had alone time. Ryan had the next day off and so we slept in the following morning.

Later that day we went shopping, just the two of us. I used a gift card to get a little something for me and he had a gift card to get a little something for him. We ending up spending less than $15 for both items! It was nice to spend time together and get something we wanted and not needed because when you're living on a tight budget, wants are the first thing to go.

It was low key and mostly uneventful but as parents of a large family, it was just what we needed. I hope there is a little more in the budget next year to leave our house but truly enjoyed staying home this year. Honestly, I'm not the big celebration kind of girl and it was nice to just sit.

Four years? Has it been that long?

So four years ago, I was married to a different man, I live in a different place, I had a different dog and I had only two kids. Also four years ago, I had many of the same friends, went to the same church, and that's about all that was the same. Four years ago three family members were still here on earth: Garrett, my grandpa and my mom. Four years ago I was a stay at home mom trying to make ends meet with very odd jobs while still trying to home school my girls. Four years ago I thought my life was good but hard. Four years ago, I was about to approach the hardest season of my life and I didn't know it yet.

Four years have gone by so fast. I'm sure I didn't think so at the time, but now I can't seem to figure out where the time went.

November 13, 2006 Garrett was admitted to the hospital. By the following morning, as I was on my way to the hospital to bring him some playing cards to pass the time, I got a message from the Chaplin. I called back but, no one would give me any information. When I arrived at the hospital, I was meeting a different Chaplin in the ICU waiting room. All I could think was just an hour ago Garrett called me and wanted me to bring him something to do. This was supposed to be a couple days stay in the hospital on IV fluids. How did I end up in the ICU waiting room?

As I look back at the event, so many are fuzzy now but there are a few moments that stick out and are etched in my mind. It's what I think photographic or eidetic memory would be like. I remember what I was wearing and what the Chaplin was wearing. I remember the sounds and smells. I remember what I was thinking. I remember the first nurse I met, the room in which Garrett was, what he looked like, the smells and then pulling his wedding ring off his finger. I remember who I called, what I said and then I remember just stopping. I just stood there. He was supposed to just be sick with the flu.

This day was different from the next several months to come. Over the next several months I began to know what questions to ask. I knew the medical terms. I knew the doctors, nurses and techs. I knew the policies and procedures.  I knew what medication did what and even dosage. I knew who to call then certain things happened and what to do when other things did not happen.

But that first day, I couldn't figure out the simplest of things. The visitors just kept coming from friends to co-workings, pastors and even just acquaintances. If you visited and are reading this, I remember you coming. I remember every person that first day. I remember what I told people. I remember not being able to eat. I remember just wanting answers and that there were none. I remember wanting to switch places with him.

I started a journal. I wrote down with what doctors we talked. I wrote down the nurses on duty for each shift. I wrote down the visitors, phone calls and emails. I wrote down stats from blood pressure and heart rate to temperate and even test results. I made phone calls and wrote down who I had called. I changed my voice mail to have updates. It was not a Facebook world and blogs were not popular. So I set up text messaging on my phone because I couldn't answer the phone while in his room and I rarely left the room. I lived there around the clock for almost a month.

I have shared very little of that time of my life with others. Those who were close may have been there and seen me, but there was a very small circle that knew where I was inside. In fact, by the one month mark, I decided to join a woman's accountability group. I became bonded to "new" people. I created a support around me. This group help me deal with all areas of life. I didn't focus on the fact that my husband was living in the ICU on life support or that my kids were living with my parents and my apartment was a storage being no one actually lived there. I focused on me, getting emotionally healthier, getting closer to God, building female relationship and being the woman God called me to be. I discovered who I was. It was hard, but I faced the pain of my past and I embraced healing, as painful as it was.

I could have mourned for fourteen months that my life wasn't supposed to be that hard. I could have gone into self-pity that my kids and I were having to go through this. I could have thrown a hissy-fit that my husband was sick and it wasn't fair. I could have sat by his bed every day and cried out "Why, why, why God!" Oh and believe me, there were moments, even days and weeks that I did all those things. But in the broad scope of things, it wasn't the theme of those fourteen months.

This moment was a defining moment. Over the first two years, God changed me, grew me, pruned me, loved me and covered me. Then the next two years He poured out blessings beyond my greatest dreams. I am who I am today because of who God was to me then and what He did in me then. Four years ago, I was bitter, angry, shut down and I didn't know it. I was lonely and alone. I isolated myself from the world and didn't know how to get out. God quieted my world so I could hear Him. And I did! I am not the same person that I was four years ago. I know I am not alone and most days I don't feel lonely. I have a support system that I am proud to say I know would do anything for me to help when I needed it.

I know there are people in my life that feel alone. I know there are people in my life that feel lonely. I have been there and I do understand. I don't want you to feel alone but I know you may feel that way. This blog has opened doors to amazing relationships for me this past five months. I know that fours years ago I was not in a position to reach out and help anyone, I was drowning. But today, I'm here for you. Let me know what I can do, call me, I'm here.

I'm excited to see what I have to say about what God will do the next four years...
